Automotive manufacturing is just one of many demanding industries that we service at Richardson Metals, Inc. Our ability to produce low-cost high precision components is the reason that we have so many repeat customers in the industry.

In this project, we were tasked with the manufacturing of a line tracking laser housing assembly. This is a multi-faceted product that had to be in full compliance with a number of auto industry standards.

The customer supplied specifications called out the use of 6063 aluminum; this material was selected for a number of reasons. This project requires extrusion and machining, which is where 6063 excels; it delivers the best combination of formability and strength and is ideal for complex thin walled geometries. It measures 2.750" x 2.750", which is an unconventional size for a housing such as this, and required precision extrusion to avoid the twisting and bowing that is usually, associated with parts of this dimension.

This project also required a number of other manufacturing processes, once extruded the housing was CNC machined on our Haas CNC machining center. This high precision capability allowed us to easily achieve the ±.005" tolerances that the customer spec required. Each unit was also laser etched and anodized with PEM nuts installed.

This customer was so pleased with our work and attention to detail, that they continue to partner with us. This product represents 300 to 500 pieces per year, produced with lead times of 4 to 6 weeks.
